New camera buying thread Empty New camera buying thread

Looking for a new camera?

Please mention:

  • What you like to shoot (travel, family, sport, seascapes etc...)?
  • What about portability and size?
  • What sort of budget do you have in mind?
  • Do you want to point and shoot, or control all the settings?

Nothing beats the experience of using a camera and looking at the images yourself but this thread is a place to ask questions and share recommendations. It replaces this one from last year. Some popular camera recommendations are listed in the following camera suggestions knowledge base articles which everyone is free (and encouraged!) to update:

Some camera suggestions

  • Compact cameras (from budget to high-end)
  • DSLR interchangeable lens cameras
  • Mirrorless (compact system cameras) interchangeable lens cameras
  • Video including still cameras with great video
  • Lenses and Accessories (including software, tripods, lenses, filters and so on)

Prices in the wiki are published RRPs but these do not represent real world prices and may not properly indicate whether models are in similar price brackets. On top of that, prices fluctuate and a camera that is considered just OK at $500 can become a red hot bargain at $250, so it would be great if people shared deals that stand out. In this thread, besides reducing duplication of similar questions, we can also get a list of recommended retailers, trustworthy review sites and some really good advice on what to buy (and how to choose the right camera for you) all in one place. For some advice on taking better photos or understanding the jargon, check out the tutorials and theory thread too. Smile

Here are some reputable review websites.

Steve's Digicams
Camera Labs
The Digital Picture (Canon DSLR and lenses)
Photozone (excellent lens reviews)
Snapsort (for side-by-side camera comparisons)
DXO Sensor Ratings
Camera size comparison
Flickr's camera finder lets you see images grouped by camera model
